Pricing your site. "What will it cost me?" The most basic questions of all. After all we want to know what something will cost us before we can buy it,............. right? |

The question seems simple enough, and yet it is actually the hardest one to answer. You may recall, I stated earlier on the HomePage that web sites were build and designed basically by two groups of people. The programer group and the advertisement agency group. Why the difference between them? The programers tend to build sites more for the client. They like to fill up the sites with a lot off bells and whistle items that make a site look cool. The advertisement agency group tent to build the site with the client's customer in mind. |

They build the sites to sell or move items. So although the programer group site my take a little more time to build, it in fact could also be the cheaper of the sites. The advertisement agency group will do a lot more behind the scene work, in research, sales assessments, and studies. Then build the site to suit the client's customer. This site will be a lot more in cost. We at Cal-Alta have combined this effort as much as possible. As much as we believe research is important to our client's site, we do not however dwell on it too long. When you hire us you get both, the quality of the programer and the expertise of an advertising agency. A lot of the companies will do a song and dance around their prices, well rightly so, as they are, not sure what to charge. Like everything else on the market today, a lot of the costing is based on what the market will support. We at Cal-Alta will in fact give you an idea of what your web site will cost you right from the start. Although true we will not be able to tell you exactly what it may cost you, we will however be able to give you a very good idea where it will take you. Some companies will charge strictly by the hour. Some companies break up the work and charge at different rates, for different work. Some tasks are easier then others. Therefore we have not broken our prices up or charge by the type of work you may want. Remember, as this market is so new, a lot of the designers do not really know what to charge. It is not uncommon to hear of web pages going for as much as $50,000 and more. There are some web designers advertise with slogans such as " Corporate Web Pages Starting at $5,000." This brings us to our pricing policy. We simply charge by the hour were possible. There are some cases where a charge by the hour may not be possible due to contracting out some of the work. For example doing a site in other languages, setting up a charge account, we may be required to cover license fees etc. Although more time maybe consumed doing java, then html, the time used up is what is chargeable not the type of work done. Some companies charge a different rate for everything they do. This includes photo editing, which can be very hard to guess how long it would take. Some photos are very simple while others very complex. We have therefore found it to be a lot more simple not only for you but for us too, to simply quote our price by the hour. This brings us to the other question. "What time is chargeable?" We do not charge for a sales call, but it would be reasonable to expect to be charged for a consultant charge if you asked him to build you a web site, even a demo site, during a sales call. After a sales call, which will set you up with a better understanding of what you may be looking at, there is a fee charged. After all, once contracted to do your site, expect your consultants time to be billable. You will find that we at Cal-Alta spend a fair amount of time not only working on your web site, but also doing a fair amount of research. A site, after all, is not only about graphics. It is about information. |

Finally we would just like to add, that our payment policy, being along the line of the web design industry, is to ask for 50% of the estimated cost up front. Balance due upon completion of the site. The reason we ask this, is due to the fact that most of the cost of producing a web site is labor. We find that when a customer has 50% of the cost already invested in the web site, he will tend to be less relaxed about supply information that may be needed to complete his site. We have found that when we have not asked for any funds up front, we had a harder time to get the customer to work with us. This lead us to chasing him down and in the end we found it was costing us to much time, which ended up costing us also money. The end result was that the actual cost of the web site increased, and this made the customer unhappy, as he saw the price of his web site increase. It takes both parties to build a good, reliable web site. We like to work closely with our customers. This makes for not only en efficient web site, but one everyone will be proud of. |
